He graduated cum laude from UC Berkeley in 1965 followed by Harvard Law School in 1968 where he was the executive editor of the Harvard Law Review. He then clerked for the Hon. Bailey Aldrich (1st Circuit) and Philip Elman at the Federal Trade Commission.

Shirley R. Weintraub Gottstein, 94, was born in Kansas City, Kansas, to Evelyn and Isadore Weintraub. Shirley and her parents owned and operated the Weintraub Bakery for over 40 years. She graduated from Central High School in 1943 and from Kansas City Junior Business College in 1944.
