Sandra Friedman Czarlinsky (Sandy), 90, of Houston, Texas, died peacefully on Monday, Jan. 10.
A graveside service will be held on Sunday, Jan. 16 at 11 a.m. at Rose Hill Cemetery, 6900 Troost, Kansas City, Missouri. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Women of Reform Judaism or a charity of your choice.
Sandy was born in Springfield, Illinois, to Samuel and Emma Friedman. She grew up in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. She graduated from University of Missouri with a degree in Journalism in 1952. After graduation, she moved to Kansas City and married Robert Czarlinsky.
Kansas City became her home for over 67 years. For many years she volunteered at The Temple, Congregation B’nai Jehudah serving on numerous committees as well as a member of its Board of Directors from 1971-1989. After that time, she has been an Honorary Board Member. During her tenure, she represented Temple on the Union of American Hebrew Congregations Midwest region as vice president from 1980-1989 and again from 1998-2000.
In addition, Sandy found much joy volunteering and holding leadership positions with the Temple’s Sisterhood. She not only served as local president from 1971-75, but also served as District 20 President from 1980-82. She continued her leadership on the national level from 1992-1997.
Besides her volunteer work, she was the editor of the Temple Bulletin for many years. She also was a co-owner of Unique Judaica, a mail order catalog. She dedicated over 20 years of service to the Jewish Community Center of Kansas City. During this time she held numerous positions including: Russian Resettlement Coordinator, Marketing Director and helped to create the first Jewish Arts Festival.
Sandy leaves her son, Randy Czarlinsky of Houston, Texas; son, Joel Czarlinsky (Stephen Helmke) of New York City; and a daughter, Andi (Jeff) Callam of Greenville, Indiana. She leaves four grandchildren: David Czarlinsky, Lauren Czarlinsky, Emily Callam and Clay Callam.
