Her project: Development of a Novel Tacrolimus Prodrug to Target the Colon for Treatment of Ulcerative Colitis, was selected as the top winner from projects done throughout Kansas, Nebraska and Oklahoma. She was awarded a $2,000 scholarship and will now represent the region at the national competition in Dayton Ohio next month.
JSHS is a collaborative effort with the research arm of the Department of Defense and administered in cooperation with nationwide colleges and universities. JSHS aims to prepare and support students to contribute as future scientists and engineers — conducting STEM research on behalf of or directly for the Department of Defense, the Federal research laboratories or for the greater good in advancing the nation’s scientific and technological progress.
Samantha, who has been an advocate for environmental and social justice, (and was the plaintiff in a lawsuit seeking to get Governor Sam Brownback to uphold the Clean Air Act) plays the violin and trumpet. She also loves playing ping pong and Frisbee, and is looking forward to studying engineering next year in college. She is the daughter of Joe and JoAnn Farb of Lawrence, Kansas, and the granddaughter of Bernie and Judy Fremerman and the late Jack and Shirley Farb.
