Shari Baellow, Karen Berger and Allen Lebovitz (both of Kansas) and George Lebovitz (of Jerusalem) are the children of Kate (z”l) and Eugene Lebovitz (z”l), Holocaust survivors who met in the Budapest Ghetto.
I just recently returned from visiting my brother and sister-in-law, George and Aviva Lebovitz, who live in Jerusalem. George set up a tour for us to go see a small Holocaust museum (The Testimony House) located in Nir Galim, a moshav near Ashdod. This moshav was started by mostly Hungarian Holocaust survivors. They have tour guides who walk you through the museum and a virtual tour of Auschwitz. It was well worth seeing.
The highlight of the trip was the last room where they had survivors’ pictures and testimonies. My parents’ wedding picture was there, and when you rotated the picture, my mother's testimony from the Kansas City book of survivors, “From the Heart : Life Before and After the Holocaust - A Mosaic of Memories,” was on the back with her picture.
We knew the photos were there because George's granddaughter (my great niece) Adina Lebovitz went with a group to see this museum, and she was totally surprised at seeing her great-grandparents’ picture there! That's why we went.
The tour guide took our picture standing by our parents' photo. They said it was the first time they’d had children of one of the pictured survivors visit.
I don't know how our parents' picture got to that museum, but it really was special!
