However, the letter to the editor in the Sept. 21 issue of The Chronicle titled “American Fascism” demonstrates to me what is wrong with our country today.
People who appear to be educated put forth a scenario that only supports their ideology, and there is no room for a healthy and open discussion. In response to the diatribe in that article, I would like to point out that it was a Republican administration that passed the Emancipation Proclamation into law. It was vigorously opposed by the Democratic Party. It was the Democrats who created and supported the KKK. In the 1940s it was Lyndon Johnson, who later became president, who voted against the anti-lynching law. President Franklin D. Roosevelt, also a Democrat, refused to bomb the train tracks into Auschwitz, which had the potential to save hundreds if not thousands of Jewish lives. He also refused to allow the St. Louis to dock in the United States. Instead, he sent it back to Europe where two-thirds of its passengers were murdered by the Nazis. A Democratic president chose to visit the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, but not Israel, on his first Middle East trip. It was also a Democratic administration that refused my parents entry into this country because they were Polish Jews. It should also be noted that Republican presidents have been much more sympathetic and steadfast partners of the State of Israel than any other Democratic administration since Harry Truman.
It is easy to find books and articles to support either side of the argument. The real question is, in 2017, what is best for the Jewish community and the State of Israel? I believe our president is good for the State of Israel, and will be good for our country if the “Never Trumpers” would work toward making America great rather than their one-sided blind opposition to the administration.
As for myself, I am proud of my Hewish heritage. I am proud to be an American, and proud to be a Republican. To those in my community who blindly follow the liberal left, I say be careful what you wish for.
