Dr. Alan Roy Israel passed on Jan. 2 at the age of 85.
Alan was born on May 2, 1939, in Cleveland, Ohio, and was a beacon of warmth in the lives of all who knew him. A compassionate and loving man, he was known for his infectious laughter and his supportive nature.
As a devoted psychologist, he spent a lifetime helping others navigate the complexities of their minds with empathy and understanding. He dedicated nearly 30 years of his career to the VA Hospital in Leavenworth, Kansas, overseeing the inpatient mental health clinic. He also tremendously enjoyed teaching Introduction to Psychology at Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, Kansas. For much of his career, he maintained a private practice, where he worked closely with his beloved wife, Gayle, who managed the practice. He retired at the age of 79, leaving behind a legacy of care and compassion.
Alan drew strength from his Jewish roots. As the verse from the Torah says, "Love your neighbor as yourself," Alan truly embodied this commandment, greeting everyone with a cheerful wave and a radiant smile. Alan was a man of humor and mirth, always ready with a joke or a prank to lighten the moment.
His love for his family was paralleled only by his love for his favorite sports teams: the Kansas City Chiefs, the University of Kansas Jayhawks and the Cleveland Browns. His hobbies, ranging from the thrill of playing poker to the excitement of visiting casinos, showcased his adventurous spirit. Alan was more than just a resident of Gainesville, Florida; he was a vibrant part of the community, having also left his mark in Overland Park and his birthplace, Cleveland.
Alan leaves behind a loving family who will cherish his memory: his beloved wife, Gayle, with whom he shared a beautiful life since June 11, 1967; his sons, Loren and Neil, and their wives, Maya and Suzie; his brother, Jerry; and his treasured granddaughter, Kayla. He is preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Florence Israel.
Alan's life was a testament to the joy of living fully, loving deeply and laughing heartily. His memory will continue to inspire and uplift those who had the privilege of knowing him.
