Michael Harris Malyn, 77, of Overland Park, Kansas, passed away on April 27 at Village Shalom.
Funeral services were held on May 2 at the Yukon Chapel in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, with burial following. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Cemetery Committee at Congregation Beth Shalom; the City of Fountains Foundation; the American Diabetes Association; or the charity of choice.
Michael was born Feb. 23, 1947, to Herbert and Irene (Iskowitz) Malyn. He studied horticulture at Temple University and earned his BA in landscape architecture from Utah State University. He met his second wife, Wendy Schlozman Malyn, in 1987, and they were married the following year.
He worked for Kansas City, Missouri, Parks and Recreation for 28 years. He was involved in numerous projects related to parks and boulevards, including overseeing the beautification of Brush Creek; development of Shoal Creek Village in Hodge Park; a revision of the lake at Loose Park; and planning for several area fountains. After his retirement, Michael joined Bucher Willis and Ratliff Corporation and later Land 3.
Michael was involved with the state in the development of licensure of Landscape Architects in Missouri. He was a fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects and was a past president of the Prairie Gateway Chapter. He was a member of the advisory board of the City of Fountains Foundation. He was also a member of Congregation Beth Shalom and served on its Cemetery Committee.
Michael enjoyed traveling (particularly cruises), collecting seashells and antique cameras, ballroom dancing, photography and making pottery. Later in life, he began restoring antique cameras. He was the family genealogist for the Malyn and Iskowitz families.
Survivors include his wife, Wendy Malyn, of Overland Park; sons, Justin (Kimberley) Malyn of Belton, Missouri, and David (Brittany) Malyn of Kansas City, Missouri; daughter, Stephanie (David Olmos) Malyn of San Diego, California; brother, Gary Malyn of California; and numerous aunts and cousins.
