Evelyn R. Baru, 95, of Leawood, Kansas, passed away on April 26 at her home.
A graveside service was held on May 1, 2024 at Rose Hill Cemetery, followed by a Shiva service/condolences at the home of Steve Baru. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to The Parks and Recreation Foundation of Johnson County (jcprdfoundation.org).
Evelyn was born on March 13, 1929, in Kansas City, Missouri, to Izzy and Pauline (Cohen) Bressel. She attended Paseo High School and later met and married Gerald Baru, her loving partner, on Oct. 8, 1950. They were happily married for 64 years until Gerald’s passing in 2014. Her main employment through the years was a homemaker, but she was once an executive administrator at MGM Studios in Kansas City, Missouri, back when Kansas City was a major hub for film distributors.
She was a former member of The Temple, Congregation B’nai Jehudah, and a founding member of Temple Beth El.
Evelyn was an avid bingo player, and enjoyed friendly chatting and smiling a lot at Town Village of Leawood.
Evelyn is survived by her children, Steve Baru (Overland Park, Kansas), Cheri Baru Deverey (married to Mark Pfefer) (Overland Park) and Dan Baru (San Diego, California); and grandchildren, Jon Baru and Brian Deverey (Overland Park). She is also survived by her nieces, Linda Bitner Sugerman (Denver, Colorado) and Lori Baru Kahn (Plano, Texas).
