Sherry Suzanne (Shafton) Lieberman, 81, of Woodland Hills, California (formerly of Leawood, Kansas), passed away on March 25.
Sherry was born on Sept. 21, 1942, to Isadore and Charlotte (Kaminsky) Shafton in Kansas City, Missouri. She married Cary J. Lieberman of Kansas City, Missouri, in 1966, and the couple were married for 49 years.
Sherry was preceded in death by her husband, Cary, and her parents. Sherry is survived by her son, Jeffrey A. Lieberman of Oceanside, California; daughter, Mindy (Lieberman) Allen of Los Angeles, California; grandson, Hutton Wright; brother, Joel R. Shafton of Olathe, Kansas; sister Andrea B. (Shafton) Duarte-Rambo of Overland Park, Kansas; brother and sister-in-law, Mickey and Carla Lieberman; brother and sister-in-law, Vicki and Richard Helfand; and many cherished nieces, nephews and cousins.
Sherry was a member of Congregation Beth Shalom. Her deep roots and love of the Jewish experience were matched only by her immense compassion for family and the community she served.
After graduating from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Sherry followed a path of excellence to the profession of her dreams in advertising. A true trailblazer, Sherry began her career in Chicago as a copywriter in a time when women were not widely accepted in the field. Impassioned by her vision, she pushed through the doubt and naysayers to become a master of her craft with grace, determination and compassion.
Sherry became an award-winning entrepreneur, establishing Kansas City’s successful Etc. Advertising. Sherry’s integrity was matched only by her insatiable sense of curiosity and love of investigative journalism, proving that she possessed the unbeatable formula to meet her clients’ needs through radio and television advertising.
Sherry relished in serving the community. As a former member of the Kansas City PBS (KCPT) board and manager of their highly successful auctions, Sherry enabled KCPT to thrive. Sherry’s passion also greatly benefited the Louisiana Lions Eye Foundation during Hurricane Katrina recovery efforts, assisting with fundraising for those who lost their vision during the monumental storm and beyond.
Sherry’s greatest attribute was her ability to make everyone feel special. She was unwavering and kind. Everyone who met her was captivated by her beauty, fullness of life and compassion. She leaves a huge hole in many hearts and will be so greatly missed.
Funeral services were held on April 3 at the Louis Memorial Chapel. Interment followed at Mt. Carmel Cemetery. The family suggests memorial contributions to a charity of the donor’s choice.
