Larry Donald Kamin, 90, died peacefully on March 16 at Village Shalom in Overland Park, Kansas.
Larry was born on Sept. 7, 1933, in Kansas City, Missouri, to Burt and Evelyn Kamin. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Jay Kamin.
After graduating from Paseo High School in 1952, he went on to earn his Bachelor of Science in education at Central Missouri State College in Warrensburg. He continued to further his education, earning his Counselor’s Certificate and a master’s degree in physical education.
During his 45-year career in the Kansas City, Missouri, School District, he served his students not only as a teacher, but as a coach, counselor and vice principal at his Paseo High School alma mater. In a 1989 interview with The Kansas City Jewish Chronicle, Larry emphasized the importance of being available to his students at all times. In his words, “I knew the children, and they knew me.” He was proud to say he knew the names of each and every one.
Larry was confirmed at The Temple, Congregation B’nai Jehudah, where he was a member for much of his life.
In addition to a fulfilling career, he was a truly devoted husband, content spending time with his wife and family. He loved sharing the important milestones in his stepdaughter’s and grandchildren’s lives and took great pride in all their accomplishments. In his free time, he enjoyed movies, was an avid reader and football fan.
Larry is survived by his wife of 31 years, Jackie Nowick Kamin; his stepdaughter, Neily Schoegler; grandchildren, Alex Schoegler and Tyler Keys; sister in-law, Stevie Pessin; brother-in law, Shelly Pessin; and nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on March 19 in the Yukon Chapel at Mt. Carmel Cemetery, followed by a graveside service.
Honorary pallbearers included Morris Soltz, Anthony Merlo, Sam Devinki, Charles Dorfman, Mark Levin, Michael Goldman and Greg Pessin.
The family suggests donations to Village Shalom or Kansas City Hospice.
