David Hertz Rabinovitz, 72, of Kansas City, passed away peaceful
ly on Feb. 15. Graveside services were held in his hometown of Des Moines, Iowa, on Feb. 19 at Jewish Glendale Cemetery.
Memorial contributions in honor of David can be made to Kehilath Israel Synagogue in Kansas City; the Bureau of Jewish Education in Phoenix, Arizona; or the Sunflower Bakery in Washington, D.C.
David was born on May 15, 1951, to the late Ronald and Rosa Rabinovitz of Des Moines. He graduated from Roosevelt High School and attended the University of Iowa, receiving his BA in recreational management. David started his career at JCCs in El Paso and Houston, Texas. He then moved to Kansas City, where he directed the Barney Goodman summer camp.
David later began working in the restaurant business. He opened his first restaurant, the Metropolis, with Steve Chick (z”l), which served the Westport high-end dining community from the 1980s–90s. Before his retirement, David served as restaurant manager at the Hotel Raphael on the Plaza.
David loved his family and friends, vintage cars from the ‘40s and ‘50s, and of course, the Kansas City Chiefs. He was a member of Kehilath Israel Synagogue, where he spent many Shabbat gatherings in high school with SYO friends. David had family in Mexico and enjoyed Mexican food and culture, even honing his conversational Spanish by watching Telemundo. David will be remembered as a sweet guy with a kind and gentle soul.
He is survived by three sisters, Dina Leener (Jerry) of Chevy Chase, Maryland; Myra Shindler (Gary) of Scottsdale, Arizona; and Judy Rabinovitz of Des Moines.
