Emanuel Winston, 98, passed away on Oct. 21.
At 98, Emanuel Winston lived a long and eventful life. Born in Queens, New York, in 1925 to Anna and Jacob Wicentowsky, he was raised in the Catskills of upstate New York.
At the age of 17, Manny enlisted in the army to fight in World War II. By 19, he was sent to the European theater and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. After suffering from frostbitten feet, he was released from the hospital and was sent by himself to the front lines to find his unit. He was awarded the French Legion of Honor as well as many other medals and citations for his heroic efforts as a foot soldier in the Battle of the Bulge.
Manny somehow managed to survive the war and returned to graduate from New York University on the GI Bill. He became a CPA and moved out to Kansas City after immediately being offered a job with an accounting firm when visiting his sister Florence. He met Lois (Litman), his future wife, and after a brief courtship, they were married for nearly 71 years. They were wonderful role models for their three children, Joel (deceased), Bruce, and Debra.
Manny was senior vice president and treasurer at Brown-Strauss Pipe and Steel, a division of Azcon, where he worked for 30 years. After his retirement, he devoted more time to Kehilath Israel Synagogue where he was involved both religiously and as a talented handyman. It is said that the truly righteous are called back to G-d on Shabbat, and so it was with Manny. He passed on Oct. 21 after succumbing to COVID-19.
He is survived by his wife, Lois (Litman) Winston; son Bruce (Susan) Winston of Overland Park, Kansas; daughter, Debra Winston (Lorin Fink) of San Jose, California; and daughter-in-law, Kacy Childs Levin (R. Mark Levin) of Prairie Village, Kansas.
Manny was predeceased by his son, Joel Winston; sisters, Sylvia (David) Goldstein and Florence (Myrl) Cohen; parents, Anna and Jacob Wicentowsky; brothers- and sisters-in-law Arnold and Bea (Lazaroff) Litman, and Malcolm and Dr. Myra (Rosenberg) Litman.
Also surviving him are his grandchildren: Dr. Rebecca Howard, Sophia (Quincy) Hayden, Shaina Winston, Yale Winston, Kyle Winston and Seth Winston; his nieces and nephews: Jeffrey Cohen, Clifford (Paula) Cohen, Nancy (Bob) Cox, Robin Jaffe (R. Zev Golub), Kerry Cosner (Michael Block), Susan (Jim) Lichatowich, Ann (Greg) Geier, Jennifer (Daniel) Goldman, Stephanie (Jon) Lapine, Ellen Litman and Andrew Litman; and many more nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
The funeral was held Oct. 24 at Louis Memorial Chapel, with burial at Kehilath Israel Blue Ridge Cemetery.
Kindly omit sending flowers. The family suggests sending donations in his name to Kehilath Israel Synagogue, for the support of Israel or to your charity of choice.
