Mildred "Milly" Irene Okun of Plano, Texas, passed away at the age of 78 on July 16, 2023.

She is survived by her son, Gary Okun; daughter, Heather Klein; son-in-law, Daniel Klein; grandsons, Evan and Noah Klein; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, Michael Okun; mother, Florence Schanker; father, Herman Schanker; brother Lewis Schanker and brother Donald Schanker.

Milly was born in Kansas City, Missouri, on April 25, 1945. She had a passion for education and love of helping children and followed that passion into a career. She received a Bachelor of Education and Masters of Education from the University of Missouri at Kansas City and a Masters of Library Science from Texas Woman's University.

Milly grew up in Kansas City, where she became a teacher and later a librarian. Milly married her husband, Michael, in 1975, and they remained married until his passing in 2018. She relocated to the Dallas, Texas, area in 1979 with her husband and two young children. She had lived in the Dallas suburb Plano since 1980. There, she worked as a librarian throughout Plano at both public and college libraries. Her warm and engaging manner made her a favorite amongst the library patrons. Her children still encounter former students who fondly remember Milly as their librarian.

Milly and her husband worked on the design of their home in Plano together. She kept up a house full of life and activity, which usually included at least one parakeet, often many more. She also quickly embraced her daughter's chihuahua, Coco, who became another beloved family member to her. She will be deeply missed.

Graveside services were held on July 23 at Rose Hill Cemetery in Kansas City, Missouri. Kindly omit flowers; the family suggests that contributions go to Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas, 7800 Northaven Road, Dallas, TX 75230-3226.
