Jerome (Jerry) Allan Medol, 80, died Jan. 26, 2023, in Merriam, Kansas, from complications of leukemia.
He is survived by his nephew Andrew Hyman; niece Carolyn Hyman; nephew Mark Hyman and his children, Erica, Brooke and Drew Hyman; and brother-in-law Morton Hyman. Jerry was preceded in death by his father, Ralph Medol; his mother, Esther M. Medol; and his sister, Claire Medol Hyman.
Jerry received a master's degree in sociology from University of Missouri-Kansas City and founded his Kansas City practice, Anger Alternatives, in 1986.
In 1972, Jerry founded The Men’s Project, one of the first three programs in the country aimed at ending domestic violence.
Jerry has been referred to as “The father of men's work in Kansas City,” convening intentional men’s groups since 1979. In 1998, he was initiated into The ManKind Project (MKP) and was a cornerstone of the MKP Heartland Area until his death.
Recently, Jerry said, “I’ve been in men’s groups for 57 years. Funny. I didn't have a life before I joined MKP. I had no way of trusting men, and because I couldn't trust men, I couldn't begin to trust women. I've done a lot of neat things, and every one of them comes back to having done my men’s work.”
Burial and a service was held Feb. 9, 2023, at Chevra Kadisha Cemetery, 1601 North and South Road, St. Louis, MO 63130.
A Celebration of Life is planned for May 21, 2023, near Lawrence, Kansas.
