Carole P. McArthur, 75, of Kansas City, died Friday, May 20, 2022.

She was born December 15, 1946, to the late Margaret and Raymond McArthur in Queenstown, New Zealand. She was preceded in death by her brother Russell. She graduated from the University of Otago with a Ph.D. in immunology and continued on to obtain her M.D. from the University of Missouri Kansas City, specializing in pathology.

Dr. McArthur was a professor at UMKC in the Schools of Dentistry and Medicine, retiring after 28 years. She was a very respected teacher and mentor as well as a very active member of the faculty community. 

Dr. McArthur devoted her long and productive scientific and medical career to infectious diseases, spending much of her time in Africa. Notably, in 2019 she discovered the first new strain of HIV in 20 years. Her collaborations included NIH, CDC, various pharmaceutical companies and multiple academic institutions. Her research stimulated the development of numerous clinics and health care sites as she continually advocated for equal access to healthcare especially for the underserved.

Carole was an accomplished athlete, having run the Boston Marathon several times, and throughout her life, she was an equestrian. She bred and trained Saddlebred horses for many years and competed with them, winning multiple local and regional competitions.

She will be remembered in honor at her resting place in New Zealand.
