Paula Burnstein, age 83, passed away on July 5, 2021, in Thousand Oaks, California.

She was born in Washington, D.C. and went to grade school in Brooklyn before moving to Kansas City with her parents, David and Rose Goodman.

Upon graduation from UMKC, she taught first- and second-grade children at a school where many of them came to school without breakfast or money for lunch. She taught those children how to read.

She enjoyed working in the library for the Shawnee Mission School District before retiring.

She was very supportive of her sons and daughters-in-law in their creative and professional pursuits.

She was very intelligent, cultured, and well-read, and she enjoyed lively discussions with her family and friends about art, books, movies, and politics.

She is survived by her loving family: husband, Stanley Burnstein; sons Mark and Kevin Burnstein; daughters-in-law Nancy Kanter and Diana Burnstein; and sister Janice Babendure.

A private funeral will be held at Hillside Memorial Park in Culver City affiliated with Temple Israel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Southern Poverty Law Center, for teaching tolerance.
