Herbert Michael Altman Herbert Michael Altman, 97, of Prairie Village, Kansas, passed away peacefully at the Research Medical Center on the evening of Jan. 25, 2021. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and son. Herb was preceded in death by his parents Helen Caul and William Altman, his sister Joanne Feder, and his loving wife Doris Monett Altman. He leaves a daughter Jody Altman; sons, Michael (Elaine) and David (Laura); brother-in-law, Peter Monett; and his special grandsons, Dakota Sehl and Logan Monett Altman. Herb was born in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, on Nov. 16, 1923. Doris Monett and Herbert Altman made a beautiful couple and were married on Oct. 5, 1947. They were together until her death in 2002. He worked as a top salesman in Men’s Sportswear for the Campus Sportswear Company for more than 35 years. After high school, he attended Ohio State University, where he was involved in his business studies and many sports, which included the swim and football teams. He was an outstanding tennis player, winning the Cleveland Championship. He was a member of Zeta Beta Tau Fraternity. Herb was an honored veteran of the U.S. Army in World War II. He was drafted into service in 1943 and stationed in Papua New Guinea, as well as serving as a sergeant in the Philippines. Herb loved being around people and was a great storyteller, especially about his young life among an extended family and his adventures in the military. As a child Herb was always busy and ready to make a little extra income. He delivered newspapers and sold women’s cosmetics door to door. Herb loved the simple things in life such as reading the newspaper, drinking his morning coffee, and eating corn flakes with 15 slices of banana. He loved his daily swim and repairing things around the house. Herb was a passionate sports fan, who enjoyed watching the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals. He was also an avid reader of worldwide fiction. A year ago, he started reading the World Book Encyclopedia. At the top of his list was his visits with his two grandsons.
