Harold S. Olsen, 86, peacefully passed away Thursday evening, Dec. 10, 2020, with his daughters by his side.

Harold was born in 1934 in Brooklyn, New York. He was the son of Jennie and Meyer Olsen. Throughout his life, Harold valued family, hard work, education and tradition the most. At an early age, Harold worked in his parent’s candy store and became known in the neighborhood for his “famous egg-creams.”

After graduating from the New York University School of Commerce in 1956 with a B.S. in business administration, Harold joined Bamberger’s-R.H. Macy’s as a member of the executive training squad.

While in college, Harold met Rita Stream on a rollercoaster at Coney Island and in 1957 they got married.

After numerous promotions to different management positions in New York and New Jersey, he was appointed vice-president and director of stores in the Missouri-Kansas Division of Macy’s in 1969. In 1971 he was promoted to president and C.E.O of Macy’s Midwest. Harold’s illustrious career was driven by his devotion to excellence, innovation and commitment to the customer. Kansas City Downtown Inc. recognized Harold with a “Directors Award” for his dedication to the revitalization of downtown including events such as the Macy’s 10K marathon and Macy’s Kodel tennis tournament.

Harold was a director of the Credit Bureau of Greater Kansas City, a member of the board of governors of Starlight Theater and on the advisory board of the National Alliance of Businessmen.

Harold treasured his family. He enjoyed traveling around the world with Rita and their three daughters, Cheri, Julie and Jennifer. He was often found on the golf course with Rita at Meadowbrook Country Club. He adored his grandchildren and having adventures with them in Arizona.

Harold was preceded in death by his beloved wife Rita, his sister Beatrice and his brother Arnold.

Harold is survived by his three daughters and their families, Cheri Olsen and her son Matthew; Julie Olsen Minkin, her husband Scott and children Jonathan and Jessica; Jennifer Olsen Addadi, her husband Danny and stepchildren Joey and Jessica.

Private family graveside services were held on Monday, Dec. 14, 2020, at Mount Moriah Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
