Dorothy Mondschein

Dorothy Mondschein of Overland Park passed away on Thursday, Nov. 5, 2020, at Park Meadows Assisted Living. Funeral services were held graveside on Nov. 8, 2020, at the Kehilath Israel Blue Ridge Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association and the American Cancer Society.

Dorothy was born on March 5, 1924, in University City, Missouri, to Will and Goldie O’Shansky. After graduating from University City High School, she worked as a bookkeeper for eight years. She also worked in payroll for her father, Will O’Shansky, who had opened his own dress factory.

One day, while sitting outside of her parents’ house in 1946, she met Herman Mondschein who lived across the street. They began dating and on June 6, 1948, they were married. Herman was the love of Dorothy’s life, and they enjoyed 67 wonderful years together. They were both active members of Kehilath Israel Synagogue and later Congregation Beth Shalom.

Dorothy had a big heart. She was always patient and loving and cared deeply for her husband and their three daughters. Theirs was a close-knit family that celebrated the Jewish holidays and went to Shabbat services every Saturday morning together. The Mondschein Family always looked forward to celebrating birthdays, Mother’s and Father’s Day and Thanksgiving together. The Mondschein Family truly looked forward to all opportunities to celebrate our lives and their expression of unconditional love with each other.

Dorothy was an amazing mother, devoted wife and loving grandmother who will be greatly missed. Her granddaughter, Berkley Selvin, who was away at the University of Arizona, phoned her Nana almost every day, sharing her experiences and her love.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Will and Goldie O’Shansky, and her loving husband, Herman Mondschein. She is survived by her three daughters and their spouses, Judy Woodley (the late Danny Woodley) and Gino Schiraldi, Marsha Mondschein-Selvin (Jeff Selvin) and Marilyn Stanard (Randy Stanard); and her beloved granddaughter, Berkley Selvin. All who feel her loss include extended family and others whose lives she touched in a kind, helpful and gentle manner, including her caretakers.

She always gave of herself and gave her absolute best to those she loved. Dorothy leaves an enormous hole in the fabric of our family. “Have you ever lost someone you love dearly and wanted one more conversation, one more chance to make up for the time you thought they would be here forever? If so, then you know you can go through your whole life collecting days, and none will outweigh the one you wish you had back.” — from Mitch Albom’s “One More Day.”
