PHYLLIS DEE HURST — obituary Phyllis Dee Hurst Phyllis D. Hurst, 94, of Overland Park, passed away peacefully on Oct. 13, 2020, at Village Shalom, Continuing Care Facility. Phyllis was born on June 20, 1926, to Colleph and Rose Anna (Louis) Shaw in Kansas City, Kansas. Following her mother’s untimely death in a car accident when Phyllis was 6 years old, Colleph married Leah (Ulamperl) Shaw who with Colleph raised Phyllis and her brother Raymond. She attended Mark Twain Grade School in Kansas City, Kansas, and Wyandotte High School, and kept in touch with and met with her close friends from public school into her 90s. She attended the University of Texas and then the Kansas City Art Institute majoring in interior design and was also an excellent artist. Phyllis was a lifetime member of Congregation Ohev Sholom and its Sisterhood and was active in fundraising for the Denver Home for Asthmatic Children, and the various PTA’s of the schools her children attended. Phyllis loved hosting family gatherings for Thanksgiving and Hanukkah and birthdays. She was always a “selfless” and giving individual that cared for her family and others and was always available and ready with emotional support through both good and bad times. Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, stepmother and brother, and her beloved husband Harold N. Hurst to whom she was married for 66 wonderful years. She is survived by her four children and their spouses, Stephen Hurst (Lucy), Anne Jacobs (Mike), Susie Hurst (Dani Sneh) and Dr. Robert Hurst; grandchildren, Mindy Parmet (Dr. David), Joe Jacobs, Robyn Freiden (Seth), Jonathan Hurst-Sneh (Shira), Coby Hurst-Sneh, Joshua Hurst, Rachel Hurst and Jessica Hurst; great-grandchildren, Maya Parmet, Justin Parmet, Dylan Freiden, Kara Freiden, Livy Hurst-Sneh, Rylee Hurst-Sneh and Aiden Hurst-Sneh. She also leaves behind nieces and nephews too numerous to name (though no less loved and cherished). Phyllis’s ties with Congregation Ohev Sholom go deep, as her family were founding members when it was established in Kansas City, Kansas. The family would like to send a special thank you to the wonderful staff of Village Shalom for their constant caring service and attention to Phyllis and also the caring service provided by Kansas City Hospice. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to Congregation Ohev Sholom; Village Shalom; Kansas City Hospice; the Kansas City Art Institute; or a charity of your choice.
