Sonia Cotton
Sonia Cotton, 65, of Olathe, died Sunday, Sept. 20, 2020. Private funeral services were held Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2020, at Rosehill Cemetery. Kindly omit flowers; the family suggests that contributions be made to Ararat Shrine Temple in Kansas City, Missouri, in her honor.
Sonia was born March 25, 1955, to the late Ike and Rebecca Entine in Kansas City, Missouri. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Allen and Ben. She is survived by her loving husband Monte; daughter Sarah (Ben); and grandchildren, Allie, Joe and Zach. She is also survived by her sister Debbie and sister-in-law Rebecca.
She graduated from Lexington High School in 1973. She studied music at UCM Warrensburg and received her bachelor’s degree in social work from Avila University. Sonia was a licensed social worker for 25 years until retirement in 2017. She was passionate about her family and career.
Sonia’s parents ensured that my mom and her siblings had a strong Jewish education during their youth. Every weekend, they would drive to Kansas City to attend services at Kehilath Israel Synagogue and Sunday school.
She married Monte Cotton in 1976 and was a lifelong Kansas City resident. Sonia and Monte met at UCM in Warrensburg, Missouri. They shared a music stand and played cello; it was love at first sight. They were married for 43.5 years.
Languages came easily to Sonia; she studied French and later Hebrew. During her career as a social worker in a nursing home, Sonia made sure that every family she encountered knew how important they were to her. She memorized names of family members and little anecdotal stories. Her entire career, she remained deficiency free; an achievement few individuals obtain. She would scan the obituary section of the newspaper for former residents so that she could pay her respects to the family. She always went above and beyond the call of duty.
She was a perfectionist in her home and in her work. Whenever her granddaughter came over to their house to bake, Grammy and Allie would whip up a cake or cookies and still manage to keep the kitchen spotless.
