The J has announced Carly Stein as the organization’s new chief operating officer, succeeding Samantha Hammontree.
Stein started her new role on May 8.
“I am incredibly excited to be joining The J team as COO,” Stein said. “I have been an active member of The J and the Kansas City Jewish community since moving from Chicago in 2010. This opportunity to make an impact on an organization that my family and I have been passionate about for so many years is a dream come true.”
After a thorough search, President and CEO of The J Jim Sluyter felt that Stein was the best match for the position.
“We are thrilled to welcome Carly to The J family as our COO,” Sluyter said. “Carly’s experience managing both people and projects, as well as her passion for our values, makes her the perfect addition to our organization. I look forward to working with her as we continue to grow our programming and make a positive impact on our members and our community.”
Stein brings a diverse background of experience in both the for-profit and nonprofit worlds. After moving to the Kansas City area from Chicago, Stein spent five years at KU Hillel, planning large scale events, building relationships with students and donors and executing agency-wide development plans.
Stein then spent the past nine years working in digital marketing as she led teams of project managers and built relationships with clients while executing projects. She has experience in program management, organizational change management, process engineering and risk management, and she has spent her career building motivated and engaged teams that improve customer relations and internal success.
“Having the opportunity to work at The J and merge my professional expertise with my personal commitment to community and culture fills me with tremendous excitement,” Stein said.
Stein is looking forward to diving back into the nonprofit world at The J to make a positive impact on an organization that her family is involved with. Her youngest daughter currently attends the Child Development Center (CDC), while both her older children are involved in J Camp and the after school program.
As COO at The J, Stein will oversee the operations of various departments and programming, including The White Theatre; the CDC; Heritage Lifelong Learning for Adults 55+; J Camp and After School Care; and Jewish Experiences, a collaboration of Jewish Federation and The J.
“I am honored to be joining The J team,” Stein said. “I look forward to having the opportunity to utilize the skills I have gained over the past 15 years to positively impact the Kansas City community. I truly look forward to collaborating with the dedicated staff, board members, volunteers and partners to continue to create meaningful change within the community.”
