Jewish Experiences, a collaboration of Jewish Federation and The J, has announced that MeltonKC is moving under its umbrella, to expand the program’s adult Jewish education offerings.

The program, which recently celebrated its 25th year in Kansas City, was formerly part of Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy (HBHA).

“The move is a great opportunity for Jewish Experiences and for MeltonKC. We are thrilled to be able to support the continued expansion of the program that has grown dramatically under the care of Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy,” said Jim Sluyter, president and CEO of The J KC.

With Jewish Experiences’ focus on offering programs for the community, the intent for the move is to help continue to expand MeltonKC’s audience.

“Thanks to the great work of MeltonKC program director, Megan Pener, and her predecessors, MeltonKC has grown and thrived during its time at HBHA. As an educator, and a lifelong learner myself, I am proud that Melton has become such a successful program in Kansas City. HBHA will continue to work in partnership with Jewish Experiences to ensure our local Melton program continues to reach even greater heights,” said Adam Tilove, HBHA head of school.

“When we all sat down and looked at things from a strategic community perspective, it became clear what a good fit Melton was for the Jewish Experiences program. It’s a win-win: MeltonKC will further expand the Jewish Experiences offerings so anyone can learn about Jewish culture and history, and the Jewish Experiences outreach provides a broader audience for our incredible Melton instructors and curriculum - including Jewish and non-Jewish learners,” said Helene Lotman, president and CEO of Jewish Federation.

Jewish Experiences is dedicated to engaging and educating learners of all ages. The premise of Jewish Experiences is to inspire and ignite a passion and/or curiosity for Jewish learning through a variety of classes, events, seminars and conversation groups.

“Above all, Jewish Experiences was developed to provide adult Jewish educational opportunities for all in a judgment-free, thoughtful environment. We are so pleased we were able to work with HBHA — and MeltonKC Program Director Megan Pener — to make this a smooth transition,” said Sluyter.

The transition comes as MeltonKC expands its offerings.

“After another major growth year in 2020-21, we are so pleased to have even more course offerings for our 2021-22 class year. Our wide array of course subject matter and faculty members means there are Melton classes for every age and stage of life, from our Foundations of Jewish Family Living, to our advanced courses. This is going to be another exciting year for Melton in Kansas City,” Pener said.

Class offerings for fall 2021 include a special Taste of Melton on October 14, a look at the crossroads of Jewish history, Judaism’s impact on social justice, Jewish denominations in the modern world, and much more.

The 2021-22 course year also features long-time favorite instructors, as well as newer teachers, including Rabbi Josh Leighton and Farrah Udell. Classes begin in October

Just as with the rest of the Jewish Experiences offerings, MeltonKC is open to any adult who is seeking to further their understanding of various components of Jewish life. Tuition fees are $295 per student per 10-week course and include all class materials. Tuition fees for each course may vary slightly. Thanks to the generous support of MeltonKC funders, financial assistance is available.

Note on COVID safety: In accordance with CDC guidelines, MeltonKC plans to host in-person courses this fall, except for classes that are all virtual. Masks will be required for all participants, regardless of vaccination status. MeltonKC will continue to follow CDC guidelines and if necessary, they will move to virtual learning or postpone courses.
