Parents are invited to join PJ Library for an event featuring parenting author and journalist Michaeleen Doucleff, Ph.D., on Thursday, Oct. 1, at Johnson County Community College (JCCC).
The free event, presented in partnership with RaisingKC and JCCC, will focus on the science of safe, stable and nurturing relationships and how they influence children’s development.
Doucleff is the New York Times bestselling author of ‘Hunt, Gather, Parent,’ which examines parenting practices she encountered while traveling with her young daughter and studying families in different cultures.
“This book literally changed the way I parent my kids. It's a spectacular book and I'm so excited that PJ Library has been invited to participate in this event,” said Bridey Stangler, Jewish Federation’s Family Engagement Manager.
At the event, Doucleff will discuss lessons from parenting traditions that have been passed down through generations and how those approaches can be applied to raising children today. She will address ways parents can encourage children to contribute to family life, develop self-confidence and become more self-sufficient.
PJ Library will continue the conversation after the event with four discussion groups. Participants will have the opportunity to discuss Doucleff’s ideas through a Jewish lens, incorporating Jewish texts, traditions and perspectives on raising children to be kind and capable members of their communities.
The event begins at 7 p.m. in Yardley Hall at the Midwest Trust Center at JCCC. Registration includes a ticket to the event, a copy of ‘Hunt, Gather, Parent’ and a copy of ‘Discipline with Love and Limits’ by Jerry L. Wyckoff, Ph.D., and Barbara C. Unell, as well as access to one of PJ Library’s post-event discussion groups.
Registration is encouraged by Wednesday, Sept. 23, for those who want to receive their tickets and books at The J before the event.
