“Where Arks Once Stood” is an ongoing, months-long, multimedia endeavor of The Chronicle to compile the histories and photos of former synagogue buildings still existing today.

These buildings were community hubs, places where the highs and lows of Kansas City Jewry occurred during some of the most tumultuous times in modern Jewish history.

The multimedia aspect is this interactive website in which each building below has its own page dedicated to its history. We’ve worked to honor and document them, with each webpage containing in-depth research, recent photographs, newspaper clippings and sources, and, when available, vintage images.

This is not the end of the project; in our next print issue, we will include community-submitted information and recollections about some of these synagogues. That information will also go on the website. The Chronicle also plans to work with the Kansas City Jewish Community Digital Archive to provide this information for future projects.
