Simcha Gifts, a program of the Chabad House Center of Kansas City, prepares and delivers holiday packages to a variety of people within the Jewish community, including seniors living in facilities and their own homes.

One of the benefits of Simcha Gifts is that it gives children and teens in our community the opportunity to give back and bring joy to others.

Sam Hobbs, who heard about the program from his older brother, Ethan, decided to make Simcha Gifts his bar mitzvah project. He joined his brother to help with the Passover gifts, packing and loading 60 packages into a volunteer’s car. Sam then helped Ethan deliver Simcha Gift packages to several homebound seniors in the Greater Kansas City area.

Earlier this year, post-bar mitzvah, Zalman Itkin read Megillah on Purim for the residents at the Atrium as part of the Purim parties Simcha Gifts offers to area retirement centers. The residents loved the holiday parties and hearing a young person read the Megillah loud and clear made a deep impression on them.

Teens and college students who drive can be a great asset in distributing Simcha Gifts. Jean Zeldin, volunteer coordinator, has recruited Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy high school students to prep, pack and deliver holiday packages over the years. These students are following in the footsteps of HBHA graduates Avi Brudoley, Gabi Glickman and Asher Glass, among others, who helped pack and deliver Simcha Gifts packages in high school.

Simcha Gifts volunteers span the age group from two years old to active seniors in their 80s. Those interested in becoming a Simcha Gifts volunteer can email Jean Zeldin at .

The next distribution will be for Rosh Hashana 5785. Packing and pick up will be at the Chabad House Center on Sunday, Sept. 22.

Sponsorship opportunities to help Simcha Gifts continue to grow are available at different price levels. Those interested in discussing a sponsorship for a holiday in honor or in memory of a loved one can contact Blumah Wineberg, Simcha Gifts coordinator, at 913-940-1113.
