Community member Michael Crane, in partnership with Jewish-owned business Olive Tree, will hold a one-day pastrami and rye pop-up event for the community.

Update as of Aug. 1: The pastrami and rye pop-up is now sold out.

Slow-cured, New York-style pastrami and caraway rye bread baked with Kansas City Marian Milling rye flour — both to be made from scratch by Crane — can be ordered ahead of time and picked up between 12 and 4 p.m. on Aug. 17 at Olive Tree, located at 7044 W. 105th Street, Overland Park, KS 66212. The food will be sealed and ready to warm upon pickup.

Crane and Olive Tree’s owner, Mindy Riley, have known each other for several years. Last month, Crane taught a class at Olive Tree that featured pastrami on rye and other traditional foods that Crane was familiar with making.

“Following the class, Mindy and I discussed the possibility of future collaborations,” Crane said. “She mentioned a strong demand for authentic New York-style pastrami, which is not readily available in the area. As a result, we decided to host a pop-up event, offering pastrami by the pound and two-pound loaves of rustic Jewish rye bread, instead of conducting another class on the same subject.”

“Michael Crane and I have been reminiscing about Jewish foods that we grew up eating and the longing for a true Jewish deli in the KC area,” Riley said. “We had a class in June and Michael taught (more walked through) how to make pastrami. The attendees absolutely loved the pastrami. We wanted to get it out there to more people and thought a pop-up would be a great idea.”

Since retiring from Crane Brewing, Crane has been working in the field of traditional Jewish foods, having taught Jewish food classes for Slow Food Kansas on topics such as Passover foods, cheese blintzes, New York-style bagels and more. He also said he has been working on perfecting and sharing his grandmother’s recipes.

“I hope that this pastrami and rye pop-up sale will provide an opportunity to pursue my passion for Jewish cuisine in a manageable and enjoyable way,” Crane said. “My goal is to share authentic Jewish comfort foods with the community, while maintaining a balance that allows me to enjoy my retirement.”

Crane and Riley plan on more future collaborations at Olive Tree, including traditional foods for this year’s High Holidays.
