Yahad-In Unum, a nonprofit dedicated to reconstructing the crimes of the Holocaust, and the Midwest Center for Holocaust Education (MCHE) and will host the third annual Operation Barbarossa commemoration in Kansas City.
Representatives of Yahad-In Unum will present their findings and the history of Operation Barbarossa.
Operation Barbarossa, a codename for the Nazis’ invasion of the Soviet Union, began on June 22, 1941, and marked the beginning of the Nazi policy to annihilate Jews in Europe. Between 1941 and 1944, more than 2 million Jews were killed in the “Holocaust by bullets” as Nazis committed mass murders of entire communities as they advanced into the Soviet Union, far from concentration camps and killing centers.
Yahad – In Unum (“Together In One”) is a Paris-based organization dedicated to reconstructing and finding the locations of murders in the Holocaust across Eastern Europe. It has identified more than 3,300 killing sites and nearly 8,000 eyewitness testimonies from Operation Barbarossa.
The commemoration will take place in the social hall of The J (5801 W. 115th St., Overland Park, KS 66211) on Monday, June 24, at 6:30 p.m. Registration is required at mchekc.org/operation-barbarossa-commemoration, and the commemoration is free and open to the public.
