April is Global Volunteer Month, and for Jewish Family Services (JFS), volunteers help the agency fulfill its mission of “repairing the world, one person at a time.”
In 2023, nearly 300 volunteers contributed 8,198 hours (about 11 months), providing $233,643 worth of work, including stocking pantry shelves, delivering meals and providing spiritual care.
"JFS volunteers are among the most dedicated I've ever worked with. It's a pleasure to witness their ability to build caring relationships with our clients,” said Vicky Leitnaker, JFS volunteer engagement manager.
Chris Wiley, a volunteer who helps older adults with their tech problems, said, "I meet a lot of different people while volunteering. They have shared their knowledge, experiences, cultures, languages and more with me. They have all been very special to me.”
JFS has a variety of volunteer opportunities available for individuals 18 and over. Currently, the greatest need for volunteers is for food pantry drivers to pick up donations, as well as for its JET Express program, in which volunteers drive older adults who no longer drive to the places they need to go.
Those interested can complete the volunteer application on the JFS website at jfskc.org/volunteer. Once the form is received, a member of the JFS Volunteer Team will reach out to discuss the various options and determine the best fit.
