Dr. Diana Carlin, a retired professor of communications, will provide guidance on writing an effective and persuasive opinion-editorial essay at a B’nai Jehudah workshop.
The workshop will be at the synagogue (12320 Nall Ave, Overland Park, KS 66209) on Thursday, April 18, at 7 p.m.
Dr. Carlin encourages everyone to develop their op-ed writing skills.
“It is important to have accurate, vetted information,” she said. “A lot of people have life experiences that can add to the conversation, but sometimes they are not confident in their writing. It can be hard to get started writing and hard to know how to shape an opinion piece.”
“We are faced with so much content that is unreliable, from unreliable sources,” Dr. Carlin continued. “We need substantive, informed opinions. It is important for people who are knowledgeable in their field to know how to communicate their opinions. Writing an op-ed for a trusted news source is a great way to contribute.”
The workshop will provide attendees with the framework for crafting a persuasive essay. Registration is free and available to the community at bnaijehudah.org/connect/upcoming-events or by calling (913) 663-4050.
Dr. Carlin is a retired professor of communication studies from KU and professor emerita of communication studies at Saint Louis University. She is a specialist in the fields of political communication and women in American politics.
