Jewish Family Services (JFS) is preparing for its annual Hanukkah Project which will provide more than 300 individuals and families with gifts or gift cards this year. JFS’ Emerging Leaders group is at the center of pulling off the large undertaking.
The new affinity group is composed of young professionals who want to get involved in JFS’ mission of providing essential human services to the greater Kansas City community through social events in support of a cause, volunteering and leadership opportunities.
Emerging Leaders have been involved in every step of this year’s Hanukkah Project. Andi Kahclamat and Emily Jae Neuberger are co-chairing the effort. They have been working in close partnership with Rachel Ohlhausen, JFS’ director of program operations.
“The Emerging Leaders have been thought partners this year for Hanukkah, along with providing volunteer recruitment and process improvement feedback,” Ohlhausen said. “They are serving as a crucial bridge between this year and next as JFS envisions a Hanukkah Program that is more heavily volunteer-led.”
Emerging Leader volunteers have managed the process of matching local adopters with participating individuals, gathered wish lists for individuals and families receiving wrapped packages and made more than 200 reminder calls. The volunteers will also assist with the last-minute shopping for gifts and gift cards and help make sure the distribution of gifts goes smoothly.
Neuberger first got involved with Emerging Leaders earlier this year.
“I got involved with JFS Emerging Leaders because I was looking for an ongoing and accessible opportunity to give back and connect with like-minded Jewish young adults,” she said. “I enjoy being part of a continuous group to deepen my connections and identity within the Jewish community.”
Born and raised in Overland Park, Kansas, before moving to the East Coast for college and the start of her career, Neuberger sought opportunities to engage in her community upon returning home. Emerging Leaders provided that opportunity as well as a common bond.
“We get to participate in philanthropy and have fun while sharing in the commonality of being Jewish,” Neuberger said.
Beyond Hanukkah, Emerging Leaders are involved in various programs across the agency, including the KesherKC Food Pantries and older adult support programs such as the JET Express transportation program.
“This is a group of energetic and engaged volunteers that is helping JFS to be true to its promise of being here for you,” said Melanie Hayden, JFS director of Foundation relations who works with Emerging Leaders.
More information about Emerging Leaders is available by contacting Hayden at or (913) 730-1745.
JFS and Emerging Leader volunteers will hold its annual Hanukkah Wrapping Party on Wednesday, Nov. 29 from 4:30 to 6 p.m. in the social hall at The J. Those interested can RSVP at bit.ly/2023HanukkahWrapping.
