In the coming weeks, KU Hillel will host a “Playdate with Baby Jay” event for its alumni and its annual Rock Chalk Shabbat for students, families and supporters.

Playdate with Baby Jay

The first KU Hillel Alumni event of the school year, a Playdate with Baby Jay, will take place on Oct. 22 at 12:30 p.m. at the Childhood Development Center playground at the The J (5801 W 115th St., Overland Park, KS 66211). The event, held in conjunction with PJ Library, brings the University of Kansas’ smaller mascot, Baby Jay, to a playdate for young children.

Through KU Hillel’s partnership with the PJ Library for this event, there will be content available for infants through 12-year-olds. In addition to the new Childhood Development Center playground, there will be art projects and PJ Library books for families. Photo opportunities will be available with Baby Jay.

Attendees can bring their own picnic lunch; snacks will be provided. RSVPs and more information is available by emailing

Rock Chalk Shabbat

On Nov. 3, KU Hillel will hold its annual Rock Chalk Shabbat at 6 p.m in the Burge Union on the KU campus (1565 Irving Hill Rd, Lawrence, KS 66045). A service will be followed by a vegetarian meal.

Services will be led by sophomore Evyn Gadd, KU Hillel’s Shabbat and holiday interlink; sophomore Micah Frank, KU Hillel’s song leader; and a team of additional student leaders.

This year’s guest speakers include Jewish Federation Board Chair Beth Liss; KU Hillel Board Chair Scott Sher; KU Hillel Interim Executive Director Bailey Nakelsky; and a special message from Jay Lewis, president and CEO of the Jewish Federation of Greater Kansas City and former executive director of KU Hillel.

Following the service, students will be integrated at every table so community members, alumni and family can learn from students about KU Hillel. The family-friendly event will feature KU’s larger mascot, Big Jay.

Those interested can become sponsors; sponsorship levels directly support daily student life. Bailey Nakelsky can be contacted about gift designations to a specific program.

RSVPs for Rock Chalk Shabbat can be done at kuhillel.org/rcs or by emailing with specific questions.
