Jewish Experiences, a collaboration of Jewish Federation and The J, is offering a baking class around the North African Jewish tradition of Mimouna.
Hosted by the community Shalicha, Noa Dovrat, this baking class will teach participants how to make traditional Sephardic desserts while learning about Mimouna, a tradition held on the night of the seventh day of Passover.
Learning about the Sephardic culture and traditions, participants will learn to bake two delicious desserts often served in Mimouna – Sfinge, a doughnut-like dessert covered in sugar, and sweet nut cookies.
The April 2 event costs $10 per person and will be held at Kehilath Israel Synagogue. Interested participants can register at thejkc.org/mimouna. Registration closes on March 27.
“As an Israeli Jew of Sephardic background, celebrating Mimouna is bringing a piece of my childhood to the KC community,” Dovrat said. “Mimouna celebrations mean that spring is coming, a time to celebrate family and the countless blessings we have in our lives.”
Mimouna marks the return to eating chametz – and includes a variety of desserts, often in bright, bold colors. In Israel, the tradition is celebrated in many homes, with open doors to all who wish to join. More traditional families wear colorful and sparkly clothes and listen to traditional music.
Later this month, on Thursday, March 23, Dovrat will also host a Krav Maga course. For more information about these and other programs developed by Jewish Experiences, visit TheJKC.org/jewishexperiences.
