KU Chabad has teamed up with Centerplate, the food and beverage concessions provider for Kansas Athletics, to offer a full-service Kosher deli serving kosher cuisine at all weekday KU basketball games at Allen Fieldhouse.
Starting at the first game of this season, the deli offers a full menu of Kosher items at the games. The Glatt kosher deli now offers all-beef kosher hot dogs, freshly fried potato latkes, Mediterranean falafel, and its famous kosher smoked pastrami on rye. All food is prepared on-site and is under the kosher supervision of Rabbi Zalman Tiechtel of KU Chabad.
This year the deli, now lovingly referred to as the “Hawks Nosh,” is located on the second floor facing the entrance to the Naismith Atrium. This location is accessible and enables all those with an entrance pass to the atrium to have free access to the kosher deli.
“Our goal at Chabad is to bring positive Jewish experiences to every single student wherever they are at. By providing the kosher deli at the games, we are bringing the joys of Judaism right to the heart of their college life,” Rabbi Tiechtel said. “There is no greater feeling of ‘Jewhawk’ pride than to enjoy a Glatt Kosher hot dog as we cheer on our beloved Jayhawks.”
Thanks to a generous sponsor, Jewish KU students now receive coupons for a free kosher dog at the games, and many students take advantage of this opportunity.
"I always enjoy coming by the kosher stand with my friends during the games. It's a great way to merge my two passions for Judaism and Jayhawk basketball and share this fun Jewish experience together,” said Natalie Zimmerman, a senior from Sacramento, California.
The Hawks Nosh is part of KU Chabad’s “Kosher at KU” program which offers various opportunities for the students to live Jewishly while in college, with kosher meals and educational programs.
"My family and I have been coming to the KU games for years. Being able to have a Kosher bite at the Fieldhouse has taken the experience to a whole new level,” said KU alumna Marni Silver. "It is also a great feeling of Jewish pride — a sense of connection in the midst of the craziness of Allen Fieldhouse.”
