The Rabbinical Association of Greater Kansas City will host its annual citywide Selichot program and service on Saturday, Sept. 17, in preparation for the High Holy Days.
The program will take place at Congregation Beth Torah, and there will be opportunities for both in-person and virtual participation.
The Rabbinical Association’s website, kcrabbi.org, has more information about the program. Register and virtual viewing links can be found there or at forms.gle/eGw4q635ey9pda858.
The evening will begin with a dessert reception at 8 p.m., and Havdalah will follow at 8:50 p.m.
At 9 p.m., “Jewish Guidance for Living in Turbulent Times” will be the topic of a discussion led by Alan Morinis, founder of The Mussar Institute.
Rabbi Stephanie Kramer of The Temple, Congregation B’nai Jehudah said, “Alan Morinis, the leading figure in the contemporary revival of Mussar, will help guide us to be reflective during this time of year, to look inward and set the stage for a meaningful year to come. I am looking forward to learning with him and being inspired to start a Mussar practice in 5783.”
The Selichot service begins at 10:10 p.m. and is designed to help worshippers begin to spiritually prepare for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. The late hour and the themes articulated in the liturgy are to prepare attendees for the Days of Awe and set the tone for the High Holy Days. The service will be led by area clergy and a musical leadership team of soloists from congregations around the community.
