Jewish children from the Kansas City area are invited to enroll in the free Kehilath Israel Fred Devinki Religious School. Synagogue membership is not required.
K.I.’s Sunday school program is designed for students in Pre-K through their bar/bat mitzvah year. Classes meet weekly during the school year from 9:15 to 11:30 a.m. Students learn about the weekly Torah portion, holidays and mitzvot.
On Tuesdays, students in 3rd-7th grades work on Hebrew reading, writing, and comprehension skills. Every student in the school learns Hebrew at their own pace. Tuesday classes meet from 4:30-6:15 p.m.
The school’s goal is that during their religious school education, students will achieve:
- Working knowledge of the major mitzvot in the Torah
- Familiarity with the major Biblical characters and stories
- An understanding of the various Torah portions and associated prophets
- Introduction to Mishnah and Talmudic debate
- Hands-on approach to engaging Jewish holidays
- Fluency in understanding Jewish prayers
- Tools to read, write, and understand basic Hebrew
Shelley Rissien is the new religious school director. Rissien has extensive experience in the world of Jewish education. She is currently a lecturer and academic program associate at the University of Kansas. She is also a former educator and Judaic Studies Principal at Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy.
