Underprivileged children across Greater Kansas City recently received free school supplies, backpacks and clothing through the ninth annual Back to School Store organized by the local section of the National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW).
More than 65 volunteers helped pack 423 clothing bags and backpacks for children served by 12 social service agencies and schools.
“While COVID concerns once again prevented us from hosting a live ‘shopping’ event as we normally [did] at Ohev Sholom, our volunteers persevered and helped more children than ever before,” said Back to School Volunteer Coordinator and NCJW Board Member Jannie Cubbage.
The participating agencies screened the children to identify their needs and provided NCJW with specific information about each child’s age and clothing size. NCJW volunteers purchased the items, organized them, packed bags and backpacks for each child and assisted the agencies as they picked up their orders.
Many NCJW volunteers return each year, knowing the Back to School Store helps hundreds of children better start the new school year.
