The J - Jewish Community Center will host a bridge tournament in efforts to assist the food pantry at Jewish Family Services.
The Grand Slam Against Hunger Bridge Tournament will take place on April 3. The Heritage Center at The J and Town Village Leawood will be teaming up to sponsor the event.
“We’re excited to be able to offer the Grand Slam Against Hunger Tournament again, after not having it for two years. It's going to be a great time for all," said Sandra Greason, director of the Heritage Center.
Before the pandemic, every Monday, around forty people would gather at the Heritage Center to play in a bridge group. They also offer bridge lessons of various levels, leading to the decision that the Heritage Center will host this year’s tournament.
The Grand Slam Against Hunger Bridge Tournament will take place on Sunday, April 3, at 1 p.m. in the Social Hall at the JCC. Players will have an afternoon of duplicate bridge or social play. Master points will be awarded through the American Contract Bridge League.
Part of the registration fee to play in the tournament is two non-perishable food items, which will go directly to Jewish Family Services’ food pantry. In the past, the tournament has had more than 100 participants. Their donations filled about 3 to 4 donation barrels. The organization hopes to do more than that this year.
Jewish Family Services (JFS) serves about 800 families each month who face food insecurity. JFS provides food, personal care, and household items — as well as pet food for clients that have furry friends — from their two pantry locations. They help singles, families, and older adults.
"We couldn’t do the work we do without the support of the community,” said Jo Hickey, director of Pantry Partnerships for JFS. “Their donations will help feed families as they visit the pantry each month.”
Brittani Rhoades, JFS Food Pantry Manager, agrees.
“The generosity of our partners through events like this — about community and connections — makes it possible for JFS' Kesher KC food pantries to provide more than just food to our friends and neighbors who are under-resourced in the KC metro area,” she said. “We love being part of community events, like the bridge tournament, that bring in donations beyond the basic needs that government resources provide — items like toilet paper, baby wipes, and personal hygiene products are not covered through most resources.”
Those interested in registering or more information can visit TheJKC.org/Bridge or call 913-327-8044. Walk-ins will be accepted as space is available. Additional non-perishable food donations are welcome.
