Allen Fieldhouse has kosher food options thanks to KU Chabad, which provides a full service kosher deli that is available at all weekday basketball games.
KU Chabad has teamed up with Centerplate, the food and beverage concessions provider for Kansas Athletics, to deliver this service to University of Kansas fans who want kosher food at a Jayhawks game.
Starting the first game of this season, the deli offers a full menu of kosher items at the games. The glatt kosher deli now offers all-beef kosher hot dogs, freshly fried potato latkes, Mediterranean falafel and kosher smoked pastrami on rye. All food is prepared on site and under the kosher supervision of Rabbi Zalman Tiechtel of KU Chabad.
This year, the kosher deli, now referred to as the Hawks Nosh, is located on the second floor of Allen Fieldhouse, facing the entrance to the Naismith Atrium. This location is accessible and also enables those with an entrance pass to the atrium to have access to the kosher deli.
“Our goal at Chabad is to bring positive Jewish experiences to every single student, wherever they are at. By providing the kosher deli at the games, we are bringing the joys of Judaism right to the heart of their college life,” said Rabbi Zalman Tiechtel, director of KU Chabad. “There is no greater feeling of ‘Jewhawk’ pride than to enjoy a glatt kosher hot dog as we cheer on our beloved Jayhawks.”
Thanks to a generous sponsor, KU Jewish students now receive coupons for a free kosher hot dog at the games.
"I always enjoy coming by the kosher stand with my friends during the games. It's a great way to merge my two passions for Judaism and Jayhawk basketball and share this fun Jewish experience together," said Sam Cohen, a senior at KU from Tampa, Florida.
Hawks Nosh is part of KU Chabad’s “Kosher at KU” program, which offers various opportunities for students to live Jewishly while in college with kosher meals and educational programs.
"My family and I have been coming to the KU games for years. Being able to have a kosher bite at the Fieldhouse has taken the experience to a whole new level,” said KU alumna Marni Silver. "It is also a great feeling of Jewish pride — a sense of connection in the midst of the craziness of Allen Fieldhouse."
