The annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Interfaith Service, will be at 1:30 pm, Sunday, January 9.
This event is sponsored by Jewish Community Relations Bureau|AJC Kansas City and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC).
This year's theme is "Freedom & Justice Now!" This is a hybrid event. The in-person service will take place at Community Christian Church 4601 Main Street, Kansas City, Missouri. Information about how to view the event online to come.
The keynote speaker will be Reverend Emanuel Cleaver, II, one of the founders of the local chapter of SCLC, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2022. Cleaver is Missouri’s 5th District U.S. Representative, former mayor of Kansas City, Missouri, and former pastor of St. James Paseo United Methodist Church.
The Evelyn Wasserstrom Award will be presented to Rabbi Doug Alpert, Anita Russell, and Patricia Jones Macklin during the event.
Those who wish to gather in fellowship, as well as those who join online, can expect the traditions of the service to be observed: a litany of King’s words read by a coalition of local religious leaders; songs from various faith traditions; and words of inspiration.
