Beth Shalom Sisterhood's Warm Up America Project (WUA) recently donated 22 handmade, one-of-a-kind afghans to Jewish Vocational Service to be used to welcome the refugees coming from Afghanistan.
Each quilt includes a Welcome to America note, and each refugee family will be allowed to pick the one they most like.
JVS welcomed and helped resettle many of the Kansas City Jewish community’s grandparents and ancestors and is once again taking the lead on helping the Afghan refugees. Many of the women of Congregation Beth Shalom's Sisterhood are proud to be a part of this important endeavor.
Over a period of about 10 years, Beth Shalom's Sisterhood has donated 402 afghans to many organizations that distribute them to people in need. Some of these other organizations include Jewish Family Services, Wounded Warriors, Synergy, SafeHome, and Operation Breakthrough.
The Beth Shalom Sisterhood is always looking for people who would like to be part of this project. They supply the yarn to be used to knit and/or crochet 7-by-9 inch rectangles (36 in all) to be designed and then sewed together to produce these unique afghans. They will be happy to teach how to knit or crochet.
