The Sarah Peltzman Educational Series, sponsored by Congregation Beth Shalom’s Sisterhood, will begin at 10 a.m. on Thursday, October 14.
The series consists of three educational units; unit one will be presented via Zoom, and units two and three will be presented in-person from 10-11:30 am in Goldsmith Hall. The cost is $15 for unit one, $20 each for units two and three, and $45 for all three units. The fee for couples is $65 total and includes all three units.
All units are open to the entire Jewish community of Greater Kansas City. Each unit (lasting four class sessions) is followed by the fifth session with a guest speaker.
Unit dates and topics include:
Unit one — instructor Rabbi Emeritus Alan Cohen
Topic: #METOO, a Rabbinic View from the Past and the Present. This unit will look at selections from Ruth Calderon’s “A Bride for One Night” and the Talmud’s (Bava Kama, Chapter 8) statement that there is a “yes” that is a “no” that is a “yes.”

November 11: Guest speaker Rabbi Rafi Cohen will share his thoughts on the present and how the Jewish theological seminary is today a diverse student body recognizing the evolution of this subject from the past to the present.
Unit two — instructor Hazzan Tahl Ben-Yehuda (no guest speaker)
Topic: Midrash: The What and Why Behind the Stories You Think You Know”. Dates: February 3, 10, 17, 24 & March 3, 2022
Unit three — instructor Rabbi David Glickman
Topic: Great Arguments: How the Jewish Methods of Disagreement are What the World Needs Now. This is a course based on Rabbi Morey Schwartz’s book “Where’s My Miracle.” This course will dive into how different Jewish belief systems can be helpful (or sometimes unhelpful) when facing life’s inevitable difficulties. This is an expansion of the Melton course taught in 2021.

May 26: The guest speaker will be a Melton instructor who will preview a new course. Those attending will receive a discount on an upcoming class.
