Led by Audrey Asher and Diane Botwin, the group explores short pieces of literature (stories, poems and essays) by Jewish (American and Israeli) authors like I. B. Singer, Bernard Malamud, Cynthia Ozick, Philip Roth, Amos Oz, and Grace Paley. Asher and Botwin--both lawyers by training--bring to the group their love of reading and analytical focus, asking open-ended questions that generate discussion about the various works.
The Sept. 19 discussion will focus on a short story, “On Venus, Have We Got a Rabbi,” by William Tenn. On Oct. 17, the discussion will be about two short stories by author Michael Chabon. For Nov. 21, the group will discuss poetry by two different poets.
Based on the “Great Books” model of exploring literature, the group has been meeting for many years, and has a limited number of openings for new members. Members can pick up printed materials at the Jewish Community Campus for a small fee ($10), or can receive the stories electronically. Those interested may contact Lauren Levin at (913) 327-8007 or .
