Dr. Michael Sokol has accepted the title of Senior Gabbai at Kehilath Israel Synagogue.

In his new position, Dr. Sokol can be seen on the pulpit on Shabbat and holidays, calling up people for their aliyot during the Torah reading, but there is much more that goes into the position.

Dr. Sokol also acts as “proofreader” while the Torah is being read. He follows closely along as the Torah reader chants the parsha to be sure every word is read correctly.

It is said that, just as a Torah cannot be used if even one letter is incorrect or unreadable, so are the Jewish people. Every single letter is needed to make the Torah complete, and every single Jewish person makes the Jewish people complete.
