Although Passover is a festival that’s widely studied, Shavuot remains a mystery for some people, aside from enjoying dairy treats — like cheesecake — during the holiday. While little is mentioned about it explicitly in the Torah, the rabbis understood Shavuot to be the anniversary of one of the most important events in Jewish history.

The community is invited to join Rabbi Aron Rubin, head of the Kansas City Kollel, to explore the significance of this festival and important themes at the core of what it means to be a Jew. Shavuot – More Than Just Cheesecake will be at 1:00 p.m. on May 13. This virtual program is part of the ongoing Learn Laugh & Love series sponsored by Jewish Family Services and The Heritage Center at The J.

Rabbi Rubin and his family moved to Kansas City from Washington Heights, New York. He also teaches at Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy. Originally from Melbourne, Australia, Rabbi Rubin studied for two years at Yeshivat Har Etzion in Israel. He returned to Melbourne where he completed a double bachelor’s degree in food science and chemical engineering. After completing his degree, Rabbi Rubin moved to New York, where he studied for rabbinic ordination at Yeshiva University.
