The Jewish Community Foundation (JCF) and The J have partnered to offer a special promotion to members of the community. Anyone who opens a new Donor Advised Fund at JCF in the month of May will be eligible to win a one-year complimentary family membership to The J. The winner will be selected in a drawing by JCF and will be announced at the beginning of June.

Donor Advised Funds are charitable giving accounts that can be used to “pay” for donations to a donor’s preferred charities. The donor puts tax-deductible assets — which may include stock that has gained in value or cash — into a Donor Advised Fund from which they may make donations over time to various organizations like their synagogue, their alma mater, the Jewish Federation, or anything else they choose.

The donor is eligible for an immediate tax deduction, even though they can stretch the donations out over a period of years. The assets are invested professionally by JCF, which does the record keeping and works closely with the donor to maximize their charitable impact and meet their personal philanthropic goals. Hundreds of Donor Advised Funds have been established at JCF by community members of varying ages, financial means and with widely diverse giving interests.

“Now is a great time to open a Donor Advised Fund and enjoy the benefits of giving more strategically,” says Josh Stein, JCF director of philanthropy. “Many people have just filed taxes and, if they didn’t itemize, may be wondering how they can continue receiving the tax advantages of charitable giving. JCF can help them ‘bunch’ donations into a Donor Advised Fund which will allow them to continue receiving these benefits.”

Simply put, donors can bunch multiple years’ worth of charitable gifts into a single year — often with the additional benefit of contributing appreciated stock — which enables them to surpass the itemization threshold and thereby receive the maximum available tax benefits.

The winner of The J’s complimentary membership will have access to its 32,000-square-foot expansion and refreshed spaces throughout the Jewish Community Campus. The renovation includes new sports facilities, dedicated dance studios, expanded ceramics and arts studios, and much more. In addition to The J membership drawing, JCF is offering a special matching incentive for all new Donor Advised Funds.

JCF will match one grant to the Jewish organization of the donor’s choice in an amount equal to 10% of the initial contribution made to open the fund (with a maximum match of $1,000). For example, if a donor opens a fund with a $5,000 contribution, the Foundation will match a $500 donation to the Jewish charity of the donor’s choice.
