“Tradition! Tradition! Tradition!” Those words evoke images of the Broadway musical masterpiece, “Fiddler on the Roof.” Many of the memorable songs of “Fiddler on the Roof” will be part of “Fiddler in Concert,” a virtual cabaret, presented by The Lewis and Shirley White Theatre at The J, April 11 through May 9. The concert will be performed and pre-recorded and then available for viewing on-demand for $18 per household.
“Fiddler in Concert” will feature a group of talented singers and musicians performing all your favorites from Sheldon Harnick and Jerry Bock’s iconic “Fiddler on the Roof,” which opened on Broadway in 1964. Based on the classic Sholem Aleichem tale, “Tevye, The Milkman,” “Fiddler” received 10 Tony Award nominations — claiming nine, including Best Musical, Book, Director and Actor honors. It was the first Broadway musical to surpass 3,000 performances.
“Fiddler In Concert” will be set up like Broadway’s virtual release of “Ratatouille,” where singers are filmed separately, and through video editing, are brought together for a magical night of stunning performances.
“We are excited to bring the magic of this newly-recorded, on-demand concert performance of the iconic and beloved ‘Fiddler’ songs right into people’s homes,” said Keith Wiedenkeller, director of Arts + Culture at The J. “With the pandemic, we have had to completely reimagine our theater season and are thrilled we can do it in a way that is safe and entertaining for our audiences.”
The ensemble includes several powerhouse singers from The White Theatre’s recent performance of “Something Rotten,” including Tom Nelson, Matt Fowler, Krista Eyler, Ron Meyer, Karen Blackmon and Fisher Stewart. It also features 2021 Broadway World’s “Regional Performer of the Decade,” Kelly Urschel, who also starred in The White Theatre’s production of “Newsies,” Ruth Bigus and two members of The White Theatre staff, Megan Segars and Keith Wiedenkeller.
The White Theatre at The J is a performing arts leader in presenting some of the finest theatrical and musical productions, featuring an array of talented local performers from the Kansas City metro region. This 500-seat, state-of-the-art facility is located at the Jewish Community Campus, 5801 W. 115th Street in Overland Park.
