KC SuperStar — Kansas City’s premiere high school singing competition — is taking place despite the pandemic. Imagine winning $10,000 for singing your favorite song.
Produced by the Jewish Community Center of Greater Kansas City (The J), KC SuperStar will hold preliminary auditions virtually from 5 to 8 p.m. on April 6 and from 3 to 6 p.m. on April 11. Singers only need to attend one virtual audition for the competition and must register for a time slot at kcsuperstar.org. Once registered, those auditioning will be sent a private Zoom link for their live audition date and time.
“We are thrilled to have auditions via zoom this year,” said Felice Azorsky, who oversees KC SuperStar for The J. “We want to keep everyone safe and be able to provide a live audition experience, which is a very important part of KC SuperStar. We hope to see more students sign up, as being able to audition from home or during a break from work might also be more convenient for busy teens,” Azorsky said.
Those auditioning should prepare to sing one song of their choice, a cappella (without accompaniment). Individual singers from all backgrounds, representing the full spectrum of musical genres and from across the metro area, are encouraged to audition. It is an experience of a lifetime!
This is the 12th year for the singing competition ala “The Voice”/”American Idol” and hundreds of teen singers from across the region have participated in KC SuperStar. The competition provides over $20,000 in scholarships to 10 finalists. Those selected from the preliminary auditions will perform in the virtual Semifinals on June 7.
KC SuperStar is The J’s major fundraising event. It provides financial assistance to members so they can partake in The J’s many services like the Child Development Center, CAMP, health and fitness, the arts, as well as meals and transportation for The J’s Heritage Center (65+) members. Last year, The J was able to provide $540,000 in financial aid. A portion of funds raised goes to The Reat Griffin Underwood Rising Stars Fund supporting performing arts education and training programs for youth ages 14-21.
KC SuperStar 2021 chairs are Sarah and Peter Beren, longtime J members and dedicated community volunteers. In addition to the $10,000 Scholarship going to the KC SuperStar winner, other singers will be awarded scholarships for second place — $5,000; third place — $2,500; and fourth place — $1,000; all other finalists receive financial scholarships as well.
