Jeff and Susan Horen of Overland Park announce the engagement of their daughter, Melissa Elizabeth Horen, to Jacob Lehman Kaplan, son of Rosalee and Andy Kaplan of Roanoke, Va.
The bride-to-be is the granddaughter of Freda Saphier of Sarasota, Fla., and the late H. Solomon Horen of Louisville, Ky., and the late Edith and Seymour Chellin of Cranbury, N.J. She attended the University of Kansas, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science with a minor in Jewish studies. During her time at KU, she served as student body vice president and president of KU Hillel. She was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority and named a KU Woman of Distinction. At graduation, she was a Chancellor’s Student Award recipient. She is currently employed as Atlanta leadership management director for the American Israel Public Affairs Committee in Atlanta.
The future groom is the grandson of the late Sylvia and Marcus Kaplan of Roanoke, Va., and the late Rhea and Seymour Lehman of Pittsburgh. He attended Phillips Exeter Academy and Brandeis University, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics with minors in Spanish and business. He played varsity basketball, graduated with honors and hosted a sports radio show. He is currently in his second year of a joint degree program in law and business from Emory University in Atlanta.
A July 1 wedding at the Westin Crown Center in Kansas City, Mo., is planned.
Edward and Irene Blend will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on Oct. 15. They were married in Omaha, Neb., and resided there until moving to Kansas City in 1967.
Ed and Irene have one daughter, Marlene, who lives in Lenexa with her husband, Ari, and children, Sam, Alessandra and Rachel Lubowicz.
Ed retired from Puritan Bennett Medical Gases where he was a project engineer. He still works part time at the Marillac Psychiatric Hospital for Children. Irene is retired from Halls Merchandising where she worked as an assistant buyer for 21 years.
Ed presently enjoys driving and showing his 1978 Triumph Spitfire. Irene is an actress in community theatre throughout the city. Both Ed and Irene are active members at Kehilath Israel Synagogue.
Matthew and Tamar Pratt of Olathe announce the birth Sept. 12 of their son, Isaac Jonah Pratt. Grandparents are Sylvie Radvinsky and the late Israel Radvinsky of Overland Park, Marilyn Pratt of Olathe, and Jim Pratt of Greenbush, Minn. At his Brit Milah, Isaac was given the Hebrew name of Yisrael Yonah, honoring his grandfather Israel Radvinsky, of blessed memory.
Behyar and Rachel Roozrokh announce the Bar Mitzvah of their son, Ari, at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 15, at The Temple, Congregation B’nai Jehudah. Ari is the grandson of Sharon and Howard Noah, Forough and Anayat Roozrokh of Orlando, Fla., and the late Paul Cinnamon. He is the great-grandson of the late Sam and Ida Kaufman, the late Dorothy Baraban and the late Ruby and Fannye Noah. Relatives and friends are invited to worship with the family and to attend the Kiddush luncheon following the service.
Stephanie and Donald Fehr of Rye Brook, N.Y., announce the engagement of their son, David Michael Fehr, to Kathryn Nicole Bartholomew, both currently living in Chicago. David was born in Kansas City, Mo., and raised in Rye Brook. Kathryn, the daughter of Nancy and David Bartholomew, was born and raised in Ft. Wayne and Granger, Ind.
The groom-to-be is the grandson of Irene (Dolly) Gulko Fehr of Overland Park, the late Louis A. Fehr and the late Sylvia Ruth Eveloff Feldman.
The future bride is the granddaughter of the late Dorothy and Alfred Bartholomew of Ft. Wayne, Ind., and the late Janet and Wade Whitman of Hobart, Ind.
David Fehr and Kathryn Bartholomew met in Kansas City, Mo., where they each earned their Masters of Fine Arts degrees in Acting & Directing at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Kathryn and David are currently working with various theater companies in Chicago. Additionally, Kathryn works at the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago in the legacies and endowments department. David also teaches Theatre, Writing, Literature and Speech/Debate at The Josephinum Academy in Chicago.
Kathryn and David will be married in March 2012 in Kansas City, Mo., at the Hilton President Hotel.
Emily Rachel Hirsekorn and Michael Davidson Engagement Howard and Lynda Hirsekorn of Lenexa announce the engagement of their daughter, Emily Rachel Hirsekorn, to Michael Davidson, son of Ted and Maradi Davidson of Yorba Linda, Calif. The bride-to-be is the granddaughter of Henry and Louise Hirsekorn and the late Sheldon and JoAnn Hollub. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from the University of Kansas and a juris doctorate from the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law. She is currently employed as an education attorney at the law firm of Dannis Woliver Kelley in San Diego. The future groom is the grandson of Betty Downing and the late Ken Downing and the late Don and Helen Davidson. He attended the University of Redlands in Southern California, earning a bachelor’s degree in creative writing. He is currently employed as an associate broker in the construction division of Alliant Insurance Services in San Diego. An Aug. 4 wedding at the El Cortez Hotel in San Diego is planned.

Illay is the grandson of Avraham and Estella Sandberg and Guta Dvoretz, both from Batyam, Israel. She is the great-granddaughter of the late Elk and Anna Rose Peltzman of Kansas City. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Maryland at College Park. She is currently employed as a mechanical engineer in Washington, D.C. The future groom is also a mechanical engineer. The couple will marry sometime in January.
