Leora Sophie Stein, daughter of Joshua and Sheryl Stein, will become a bat mitzvah on Saturday, May 25, at Congregation Beth Shalom.

Leora’s grandparents are Stewart and Esther Stein of Leawood, Kansas; Marilyn Rosen of Dunnellon, Florida, and the late Marc Rosen. She has an older brother, Jonah (16).

As a student at Leawood Middle School, Leora enjoys soccer, art, music and hanging out with friends. She is in the school choir and is active in Jewish student organizations. She loves hiking, travel and spending her summers at Herzl Camp in Wisconsin.

For her mitzvah project, Leora started the Design and Shine program, bringing art experiences to various populations who she thought would benefit from the creative outlet. She has raised funds and led experiences for Jewish adults with special needs (through the Ahoovim Program) and seniors at Village Shalom. She is working on future events with Children's Mercy Hospital, Jewish Vocational Service and EarlystART KC. Leora looks forward to continuing to serve the community through Design and Shine, other volunteerism and her B’nai Tzedek Fund at the Jewish Community Foundation.
